About
WhatsTheNextChord is a small songwriting companion for guitar players. You pick the chord you're on and it suggests a handful of chords that tend to work next, shown as shapes you can play immediately.
How the suggestions are chosen
Every option is scored on how naturally it follows in the key your chords imply, how smoothly the notes move, how easy the shape is to play, and how well it matches the mood you picked. Nothing is random and there is no machine learning involved: the same chords always give the same suggestions, so you can trust them and learn from them.
What it is not
It is not a database of songs and it does not listen to you play. It is a tool for continuing your own ideas. The "Why this works" notes are there when you're curious, never as a prerequisite.
Data sources
The numbers behind "how naturally it follows" were calibrated and checked offline against published chord collections and then committed as plain data, so nothing is downloaded or learned while you use the app.
- The Rock Corpus by de Clercq and Temperley: 200 expert harmonic analyses of songs from Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs, licensed CC BY 4.0. It is used to check the chord-to-chord tables and to test how well the app finds the key.
